My Biggest Issues With The Beauty Industry

I’ve written a fair amount about beauty on my blog because I enjoy the artistry behind it. However, there are also a few things I genuinely dislike about the beauty industry and have made it difficult to enjoy the process of participating within it on a regular basis. For today’s post I thought it would be interesting to discuss a few qualms I have with makeup (seeing as it is one of the biggest industries at the moment) if only to come to some sort of conclusion as to how I can more mindfully contribute to it.

Glossier Review: Is It Worth It?

If you’ve followed my blog for a while then you’ll know that I’ve been a long-time supporter of Glossier. Like most beauty lovers I was enticed by the fact that it was simple, dewy makeup that can be worn every day without looking too done up. While I love the artistry of makeup and can appreciate the formulations of products, I’m not the biggest makeup wearer. So, when this brand came out and offered this image of a “natural”, summery look with cute packaging I was eager to try out a few of their most popular products, which I did.

5 Things No One Tells You About Wearing Makeup

Most people talk about their interest in makeup stemming from elementary or high school and growing exponentially as they got older. While I am somewhat in that boat, I only recently really fell head first into the beauty community online. Before 2013 I only ever wore a bit of mascara and maybe a powder to smooth out my skin if I needed it that day, but other than that I never really understood what all the hype was about. It was only when I started appreciating the techniques that went into application and the formulas that different brands produced that I learned a few lessons no one tells you before you start wearing makeup. Seeing as I’m a very realistic person, I thought I’d share a few of these for anyone else who might be dabbling in the art or just completely unsure why no one else is talking about these issues.

How I Get A Dewy Glow With My Summer Makeup

It’s finally that time of the year again where you can walk out of the house looking like a disco ball and still be an acceptable member of society. Yes, summer is here and so is the glowy skin trend that so many (myself included) love. For today’s post I wanted to talk about how I achieve my own version of glowy skin and the products I’ve been loving to give me a shine that looks like I just stepped out of the gym (hint: I didn’t.)

How To Do A Proper Beauty Clear-Out

I recently had a bit of a beauty clear-out and it felt incredibly good to make some space on my already cluttered set of drawers. I tend to forget what I have in my collection or lose interest in some products then buy more without really considering what that will mean for my storage space and maintenance later on down the line. While I tend to have a beauty clear-out once every few months, it isn’t always easy. Half the fun of collecting makeup is that you get to revisit it and rediscover old favourites that bring you joy. However, that isn’t always sanitary and sometimes you just might be holding on to products for their sentimental value rather than how much use you get out of them.

My Makeup Regrets

I haven’t been wearing makeup for that long—maybe since I started university about…10 years ago. Yikes. Anyway, since then I’ve gone through a lot of ups and downs with regards to my application techniques, products I’ve invested in, and mistakes I’ve made. Today I wanted to share a few things that I wish I’d done differently throughout the years and the mistakes I’ve regretted the most when it comes to my makeup.

My Everyday Work Makeup (Ft. Glossier)

Hi! Yes, it’s me Kat, returning from the depths of the internet and my existential crisis with a new beauty post. It’s been about 3 months since I’ve written about beauty on my blog and I’ve missed dipping into that kind of content and photography. In one of my recent posts I talked about starting a new job that was in an office rather than from home and, evidently, it has really affected my blog posting schedule and motivation. So, for today I wanted to go back to a classic ‘everyday makeup’ post, but this time with regards to my daily work routine. And yes, all of it is Glossier. What can I say? I’m obsessed.

Products I Want To Use Up

In a bid to save a bit of money while planning for a few trips around Europe, I am trying my best to use up certain products before I go and purchase more that are on my wish list. I have a bad habit of buying something that was recommended online or I’ve seen come up a few times and most of the time they don’t work for me, so I just end up buying something else. However, I’ve realized how wasteful that is, both for my bank account and the environment so I’m trying my best to use up products completely (unless they cause me any harm) before trying out something new.

What Simple Makeup Looks Like To Me

I often read blog posts or watch Youtube videos about simple makeup looks that end up involving way more products that I would expect. I’ve only recently really gotten into makeup to the point where I do have a “full face” of products at hand to use when I feel like I want to be a bit more experimental with my makeup, but I also have products that are my classic, go-to ones for the absolute minimum amount of effort I am willing to put in while still looking somewhat put together. So, for today’s post I wanted to discuss what simple makeup actually looks like to someone who isn’t a huge beauty lover, but still enjoys it from time to time.

5 Current Beauty Favourites

I’ve been on a bit of a beauty kick lately, and while it hasn’t been the best for my wallet, it has been fun experimenting with new makeup products and techniques that I’ve never really tried before or ones that I’ve rediscovered. I believe that the little things in life are important, so here are a few beauty favourites that perk me up in the mornings and make me feel just a bit more confident and ready to take on the day ahead.

A Simple Review Of The Ordinary

I was a bit late on the bandwagon of trying out The Ordinary’s products, but better late than never, right? I really didn’t know what to think of the brand when it first came out, unsure if their cheap prices were just a gimmick and the products themselves wouldn’t be worth even the smallest amount. But, I’ve been pleasantly surprised when it comes to some of the products and their features, so I thought I would write about them in some detail so that other sceptical buyers might have a bit more to go on. So far I’ve only tried out 3 products in the line, so it won’t be an in-depth look into the entirety of The Abnormal Beauty Company and what they offer. I’m very picky about what I incorporate into my beauty and skin care collection, so I wanted to start off slow before I decide if I want to test out anymore of their products.

The Everyday Blushes In My Collection

Blush was something I got into a bit late compared to others who use makeup on a daily basis, but is now something I can’t leave out of my routine. A good blush that both adds colour to your face while also sculpting the cheeks is what I’m always on the hunt for and with all the options out there I’ve found a few that work the best for me. I usually reach for a powder blush because—let’s face it—they’re just easier to apply using a brush rather than your fingers (Glossier fanatics, don’t kill at me!). However, as the weather gets colder and dryer I do find myself reaching for more cream products that can hydrate my skin while also providing long-lasting colour.

My Everyday Work Makeup

One of the best things I’ve done for my motivation this past month was getting up every day, changing out of my pyjamas into casual work clothes and putting on a face of makeup. Some people might find that weird to do when you work from home, but I’ve realized that just the act of “getting ready” as I would when going into an office job pushes me into acting like today isn’t a rest day—I actually have to get work done! It also makes me using my favourite mascara less fruitless because at least a busy day of work came out of it.

My Curly Hair Routine

It was only about a year ago that I started wearing my natural hair on a daily basis. Between April and September of 2018 I didn’t straighten my hair and instead researched the best methods to cater to my texture while also investing in the right products. Growing up I was under the impression (as many women with curly hair are, I’m sure) that straight hair was prettier and more elegant, so I opted to blow dry and straighten it every day without fail. I had convinced myself that curly hair just didn’t suit me, despite it coming out of my head that way, and instead did everything in my power to manipulate it into smooth, straight-ish waves.

My Current Skin Care Routine

Skin care is a routine I’ve been doing since I was in middle school and started getting acne after hitting puberty. I’ve always had fairly clear skin, so I don’t have to worry too much about it, however, I will get some nasty pimples during any hormonal imbalances or if I’m not moisturizing my skin enough throughout the day. Seeing as I change my routine up every once in a while and incorporate new products into my collection, I thought I would write up a quick post about what I’m currently doing to take care of my skin and discuss a few of the cleansers, creams, and masks I’ve enjoyed using the past little while.

NYX Ultimate Shadow Palette In Warm Neutrals: Is It Worth It?

In an attempt to get a bit more colour in my life during the dreary autumn/winter months I decided to pick up the NYX Ultimate Shadow Palette in Warm Neutrals, something I’d been coveting for a while now. I didn’t want to invest in something similar, but higher end like the Kylie Cosmetics Burgundy Palette because I was worried that maybe I wouldn’t like the look of those types of shades on me and would then be stuck with something that costs close to $50 and not want to use it. So, instead I opted to dabble in the shades with something much more affordable and have been testing it out for the past few weeks to really get a feel for both the NYX mattes and shimmers.
