5 Current Beauty Favourites
I’ve been on a bit of a beauty kick lately, and while it hasn’t been the best for my wallet, it has been fun experimenting with new makeup products and techniques that I’ve never really tried before or ones that I’ve rediscovered. I believe that the little things in life are important, so here are a few beauty favourites that perk me up in the mornings and make me feel just a bit more confident and ready to take on the day ahead.
Up until very recently I never really wore eyeshadow. I didn’t feel like it suited me and my oily eyelids always made it crease and look a bit chunky throughout the day. But ever since discovering Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Potion Primer I’ve been able to experiment a bit more and figure out what shades and techniques work best for me. I wrote a post recently about the NYX Warm Neutrals Palette, and while I still enjoy it for the price point, I have recently fallen in love with the Smashbox Cover Shot Eye Palette in Major Metals. It’s the perfect array of golden shimmer shades if you aren’t too confident with bold colours, but still want your eyelids to pop. The formula itself is incredibly smooth and easy to blend—would definitely recommend. And the palettes come in a variety of shade compilations!
Easy To Apply Blush
I love using a brush to apply my blush, but recently I’ve been into the idea of just using my fingers and adding a bit of rosiness to my cheeks for an everyday look. I’ve been playing around with the Stila Convertible Colour in Peony and it’s worked wonders in giving me a gentle glow and being super easy to apply. I’m considering picking up one more shade that I can use as lipstick as well, since Peony is pretty much the same colour as my lips. I just find the compact style with the mirror to be super convenient when you’re on the go.
Long-Lasting Affordable Mascara
For the longest time my go-to mascara has been Too Faced Better Than Sex, and while it’s still my favourite, I have wanted to dabble around with a few more drugstore brand mascaras so that I don’t have to waste my Better Than Sex on just a regular workday. This has led me back to an old favourite that I used to use and love in my early university days—Maybelline VOLUM' EXPRESS® THE FALSIES™ MASCARA. I’m not quite sure why I stopped buying it, but I realize know why I started. The wand is the perfect shape for my eye shape and I much rather prefer fiber bristles than plastic ones, like on the Maybelline Lash Sensational mascara that everyone is obsessed with. The actually formula is long lasting, but still easy to remove with just my cleanser, which is exactly what I look for in any mascara.
I decided I wanted to have a bit of fun with my brows lately so I bought the Soap and Glory Archery eyebrow pencil just to thicken them up a bit. I definitely don’t want to go overboard, but it’s been fun to play around with and add a bit more drama to my face on night’s out. I’m not sure if I’ll repurchase the pencil, seeing as I am more than content just using Boy Brow on my eyebrows, but I’ve only been testing it out for a few days so we’ll see what the future holds.
Non-Chip Nail Polish
I am a nail polish fiend, but I also have really fragile nails, which doesn’t make the best combination. Most of my favourite nail polishes chip after a few days, but recently I picked up the Sally Hansen Miracle Gel Polish and it’s been the longest-lasting nail polish I’ve ever used. It comes in a two-step process with the colour followed by the top coat. While, of course, it doesn’t last as long as gel nails, it does last much longer than any other polish I’ve used, even when I’ve been using my hands a lot throughout the day. I wanted to buy all the shades at once, but I realized I should probably pace myself if I don’t want to go completely broke in 2019.
