Big Lashes, Matte Lips

Everyone has a signature look and mine has fallen into the categories of big lashes and matte lips. I just think there is something so classic about the look and so easy to apply in the morning when you’re in a rush or for a night out. It’s also when I feel most confident, highlighting what I believe to be my best facial features, so it’s understandable why I’ve invested a lot in mascaras and lipstick throughout the years. My mom has also always had an obsession with big lashes—the bigger, the better has always been her motto—so I’ve watched her go through various brands and find her favourites that I’ve taken on and appropriated for myself. For today’s post I wanted to talk about a few of my favourite mascaras and lipsticks that help me achieve the big lashes, matte lips look and how I plan to wear it as we dive into the autumn and then winter months.

Favourite Mascaras

Too Faced Better Than Sex

This has been my die hard favourite for the past two years and I’m still not over it. It offers the perfect amount of clumpiness for my lashes without looking to spidery, especially when it’s dried out a bit. It is pricier than the other mascaras I’ll be talking about in this post, but I can’t help gravitating toward it as a my high end mascara of choice because it always delivers the results I want. I also love the fact that it isn’t waterproof, but doesn’t flake off throughout the day and is incredibly easy to remove with my usually facial cleanser. I will probably continue to purchase this product unless, for some unimaginable reason, the formula drastically changes.

L’oreal Voluminous Carbon Black

I’ve only just started using this one and I can say that I enjoy it for the fact that it lengthens my lashes incredibly. It’s not as volumizing as the Too Faced one, but it does add a significant amount of colour and thickness for those days where I don’t want too much on, but still need some emphasis on my eyes. It’s great for layering, although can get a bit clumpy if it’s not done properly.

Maybelline Lash Sensational

This is a very popular mascara in the the beauty community and I quickly realized why. It has an interesting curved plastic brush that hugs the lash line and applies the product evenly. I like it on the days that I still want definition, but don’t want to use my Too Faced mascara, however, the only problem I have with it is that the plastic bristles sometimes hurt my eye when I apply it. Other than that I would recommend this mascara as it works well and is very affordable.

Cover Girl Lash Blast Volume

I never expected to like this mascara since the wand is so think and the bristles are fairly short, but it’s the perfect mascara for separating the lashes and then combining it with another mascara for thickness. This paired with Better Than Sex is the perfect combination for the type of lash I want on a night out when I’m deciding not to wear any eyeliner.

Favourite Lipsticks

MAC ‘Please Me’

This lip colour is my favourite to wear in the summer because it’s a bright baby pink. I usually pair it with a metallic grey eyeliner; the combination of shades is beautiful on my skin tone and with my dark brown eye colour. The formula is a bit drying so try to apply a petroleum based lip balm before I wear it to trap in some moisture throughout the day.

NYX ‘Whipped Caviar’

I discovered this a few years ago and it’s still my favourite lipstick for the fall and winter months. It’s a pretty tawny colour with cool undertones, but isn’t too dark. The formula isn’t incredibly drying and is pretty comfortable to wear throughout the day and reapply if necessary. I would recommend this anyone who needs a staple fall colour that is in the nude category and can be pared with any eye makeup.

Charlotte Tilbury ‘Pillow Talk’

I’ve only recently purchased this lipstick, but I’m already obsessed with it. It’s a beautiful nude pink with brown undertones and goes really well with a black cat eye look. I haven’t worn it much throughout the summer because it is more of a fall colour, but the times I did wear it I found it to be incredibly comfortable despite being a very creamy matte and long lasting even in the summer heat.
