I recently published a post about the things I want to do to start my day, but there are also new habits I want to form when it comes to ending my day. After a day of work I usually just want to sit on the couch and catch up on some YouTube videos or watch a new Netflix series, but since I spend my work day looking at a screen, I want to fill up that evening time with other activities that’ll get me ready for a peaceful sleep. Some of these habits are going to take time to be in regular practice, but I find that even setting up the intention is enough to begin switching the way you approach certain aspects of your life.
Getting outside is how I want to start my day, but it’s also how I want to end it. After a long day of work it helps me to mentally unwind by going out for a walk as a commute home, in a way. During that walk I can let go of any work related thoughts or pressures and begin the process of switching from a work mind-set to an after-hours one. I usually listen to a podcast while walking, but sometimes I find that being in silence also helps my mind to de-stress and keeps me more mindful. Seeing as the weather is beginning to warm up, getting outside will be a lot easier going forward.
I used to read very regularly, but over the past few months I’ve stopped that habit. I put it down to stress—sometimes it’s hard to dive into someone else’s story when you’re too busy worrying about yours. But going forward I want to get back into the routine of reading right before bed and during any free time. It’s been taking me a ridiculous amount of time to finish the shortest of books, and I don’t like leaving a huge chunk of time between starting and finishing a one. I find that it’s harder to keep track of plot points and don’t get the ultimate experience of it. Even a page a night will keep me content at this point, to be honest.
Turning Off The Tech
I am a tech fiend and I don’t always like it. Sure, there are nights (or days, let’s be honest) where all I want to do is curl up in bed and watch a movie. However, I find that these days I tend to be watching something before I go to sleep and throw on a YouTube video as soon as I wake up in the morning. It’s almost as if I have a hard time just being with my own thoughts while going from one task to another and that’s a habit I definitely need to break. I want my nighttime routine to be calm and relaxing so that I don’t feel overstimulated and drained in the morning.
Extra Skin Care
There are nights where I dread doing my already very minimal skin care routine and it shows. As mentioned above, right before bed should be relaxing, which is why I want to incorporate more of an in-depth skin care routine to prep my skin while simultaneously calming me down so I can have a good night’s rest. This would be when I do the heavy creams, serums, and masks so that I can let them seep into my skin throughout the night with less fuss than applying them throughout the day. This also goes for moisturizing my entire body. I tend to neglect it because I don’t like the feeling of moist cream under clothes, but it has really begun to show with roughness on my hands and feet. Not cute for the summer.
Eating A Lighter Dinner
Dinner is my least favourite meal of the day and I’ll explain why. I always tend to over eat because I’m starving after a long day and, for some reason, my digestive system just doesn’t work as well in the evenings. I love a big, hardy lunch that I can let digest throughout the day while still feeling energized, but a big dinner always makes me feel bloated even up until the next morning. So, going forward I want to practice eating lighter dinners, if any at all. I’ve done intermittent fasting in the past with great results when it comes to my anxiety, my skin, and the way approach food in general. My body was able to really recognize when I was hungry rather than eating out of habit or boredom. My ideal IF schedule is eating breakfast and lunch then skipping dinner. I find that I always feel better in the mornings with an empty stomach.
How do you want to end your days?
