I’m usually always quick to find new shows on Netflix that are absolutely fantastic, but recently I haven’t been in much of a ‘watching’ kind of mood. However, the few things I have seen in the past little while are worth the watch if you’re looking for something new to fill up your time. It’s rare that I find something good enough to spend my time binging it and waiting for the next season, so I thought it would be worth discussing these shows and movies for anyone interested.
Louis Theroux Documentaries
I really did not expect to get into these, but after a few nudges from my boyfriend to start at least one of them (there are about 20 on Netflix) I gave in. I’ll be honest, it’s a rough watch. He delves deep into the mentalities and inner circles of very controversial figures and industries, but it is incredibly interesting. I do have to take a break between episodes just to recover a little bit from the subject matter, but I would recommend watching one if you’re in the mood for something raw and real.
This is another show I did not expect to like because the plot of three women robbing a grocery store to pay for their bills seems very generic and overdone. However, the way the story unfolds and the three women you follow around are so interesting and unique. It’s hard finding relatable and realistic representations of women in TV and movies, but I think this show did it well. You are on their side, but can also step back and recognize the morality issues of what they’re doing. Would highly recommend for a good binge session!
I’ll be honest, I’m only a few episodes into this show so I don’t have the most accurate review. However, I avoided watching it for a long time because I felt like it was just another show portraying a hardened female character bad-ass that I just wouldn’t be able to relate to. I was pleasantly surprised when watching it to see a superhero element that I did not expect as well as the very Veronica Mars-esque storyline. I’m looking forward to watching a few more episodes and seeing the story unfold.
I watched this movie in theatres when it was first released, but seeing as there are so many hints and clues hidden throughout it I had to give it another watch. I can confidently say that it was just as good the second time around, maybe even better because I knew where the story was going and could now focus on other aspects of it like the cinematography, acting, soundtrack, etc. While not necessarily a horror movie, I would recommend it as a creepy watch on a late night in.
Rick and Morty
This was also a re-watch, but there are so many episodes and scenes that I had forgotten and wanted to revisit. Again, it was just as good as the first time around and the second watch allowed me to spot more interesting scenes and characters I missed the first time. This is one of those shows like It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia that I know I’ll re-watch from time to time.
The newest season was released and I was quick to jump on that. It was only three episodes, which isn’t unexpected for Black Mirror, but the episodes this time were much less like the tone we are used to seeing throughout the series. Excluding one episode, I found the tone to be much more hopeful and less a warning about technology, but rather accepting that it is part of our lives and not always detrimental. It was an interesting shift in perspective that I didn’t expect to see, but quite enjoyed.
What have you been watching lately?
